Meet the Bernard's Jewelers Family

RayJrRay Tetrault, Jr., President

Ray Jr. helped out in the store as he grew up. Ray graduated from St. Johns Prep and went on to Merrimack, and then worked for the government as a wage and labor inspector in the logging camps in Maine. He later transferred to Washington D.C. as a researcher. When Bernard Goldberg passed away in October 1969, Ray Sr. asked Ray Jr. to help out for that Christmas season. Back home in Salem felt right so he and his family returned permanently that spring.

TomTom Tetrault, Vice President

Tom's mother never needed a baby sitter - she would drop him off at the store and he'd be happily occupied for hours. A favorite pastime was taking apart the old clocks that were not repairable. Tom worked at the store throughout his years at Salem High School, and went to Babson for his business degree. Always returning back for summer projects and the busy holiday season Tom knew that Bernard's Jewelers would be the place for him for the long term.

PhilPhil started working at Bernard's when he was just 14 years old; he and Tom were friends and they both grew up at Bernard's learning the trade first in the stock and trophy rooms, then engraving, sales of watches, jewelry and diamonds. Phil stayed on as Tom left for college, and has been here ever since. As a jeweler, Phil has been a significant part of Bernard's history in the Salem community.

SylviaSylvia's story with Bernard's began when she was in high school; her sister took art lessons from Ray and Tom's mother, and one day she asked if Sylvia would like to help out at the store during the holiday season. She continued working through college (after which she planned to become a foreign language teacher). But Sylvia found that teaching was not for her, so she continued at Bernard's ever since in the Home Decor and Giftware Departments. Sylvia says, "Being a longstanding employee, there are many aspects of my job which I enjoy. I especially like searching for new products at the large trade show. It's like being on a treasure hunt... and I love getting customers' reactions when the new things are displayed!"

BY THE WAY... Sylvia and Phil were recently honored for five decades of employment with Bernard's.

LouiseLouise has worked for Bernard's for over 14 years in the Home Decor and Giftware Departments. A world traveler herself, Louise loves working with and meeting great people, especially tourists from around the world. Thanks to Louise, Bernard's family has grown as she has referred many of her friends who have also become long-time employees.

JeanJean came on board thanks to Louise, who offered her friend a job share position in the Giftware Department. Jean particularly enjoys creating the displays for the store which showcase the Bernard's merchandise. She loves to assist customers, especially tourists, during the busy summer and fall seasons.

CarolCarol Goldenberg originally from Bridgeport Connecticut, now makes Salem her home. Her neighbor (Louise) told her Bernard's was looking for sales help, so Carol took her up on the offer. Carol finds that "the best part of my job is that she works in a happy place. Most times people are shopping for a happy occasion, and are pleasant to work with. I also love the owners and other sales associates - everyone gets along so well! I love helping people pick out jewelry or gift items - the job is a lot of fun."

A very knowledgeable jewelry fan who is on top of the latest trends, Carol's favorite product lines are: Lorenzo jewelry - sterling silver and 18K gold with semi-precious gemstones. "It's a great price point, and appeals to all age group with its catalog of traditional and contemporary style choices." Carol says, "You can mix and match the pieces and do special orders. Unique Settings of New York has a variety of platinum, 14K gold and palladium rings and pendants (engagement rings, diamond wedding bands and pendants). Custom design work is available, with fast turn-around time and excellent construction. We love doing business with them. Majorica manmade organic pearls set in vermeil or sterling silver in traditional or contemporary styles - very affordable pendants, earrings, bracelets and rings. Cape Cod bracelets, pendants, bracelets, earrings and rings in sterling or two-tone are very popular in our area. Jan Rich jewelry is made in USA - pendants, bracelets, earrings set in sterling silver with genuine stones including turquoise, onyx, aquamarine and amethyst. Jan has a lot of chunky statement pieces - very fun and affordable!"

Carol loves to read (she's in a book club), travel, and she's always looking at jewelry (Florence, Italy, Las Vegas and New York City). Walking her bischon frise Abraham gives her a lot of exercise. No more black diamond ski trails for Carol - she sticks to blue squares now! Football is her favorite sport (Patriots of course, and University of Michigan are her teams) She enjoys dining out, socializing with family and friends, and shopping.

Her favorite event at Bernard's is the holiday jewelry event in December - a night to enjoy seeing Ray, Tom and Phil interact with four generations of customers. Carol says, "That's the reason that Bernard's has been around for 76 years - it is still a store that people keeping coming back to because of the trust that they have in us and the personal service we provide. We hope to be around for many more years with all your jewelry and gift needs."

TammyTammy Nickerson ("Tam") was working for another store on Essex Street in Salem (where she was born and still lives), when she heard of an opening for an office bookkeeper position at Bernard's. Having observed how long the employees remain on the staff, and how happy they appear to be, of course she jumped at the chance to work here too! 10 years have gone by since she first came on board, and Tam most enjoys being part of a family rather than just an employee or co-worker; she also loves seeing the families and friends who have been customers for many generations, and enjoys when they share their stories of past and present.

MarianMarion finds that Bernard's Jewelers is a very comfortable, friendly place to work for the past 4 years (you'll find her in the jewelry department). She says that all the employees strive to be friendly to customers and sales representatives/vendors, and that the owners are extremely knowledgeable and supportive of their staff.

MaryEllenMaryEllen appreciates Bernard's dedicated customer base, which she is also happy to be a part of. She's worked at Bernard's for four years. "When a customer comes in the store, they come in for a specific reason - generally a happy occasion... and it is my desire that they leave with exactly what they wanted to buy." As a jewelry department salesperson who has a flair for putting complementary pieces together, MaryEllen is sure to find the perfect gift.

ShawnShawn is the newest member of the Bernard's crew. He is apprenticing with Tom and Phil. You'll find him at the engraving machine, adding personalization to jewelry and gifts, or working on keeping our displays in shipshape. Shawn enjoys spending his free time traveling.
