Buying jewelry can be pretty intimidating. Choosing the right piece for a friend or loved one can mean so much whether it’s spontaneous, for a birthday, or especially an engagement. There is always so much to choose from — rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, or even charms. You want the person you give it to to feel special, knowing this gift was thoughtful and personal.

Here are a few tips that should help you when purchasing a beautiful piece of jewelry for yourself or someone special:

Silver is Timeless

As beautiful as gold is, it can sometimes overshadow the beauty of silver jewelry. Silver can really make gemstones catch your eye, as it provides a stronger contrast than gold. Sterling silver, which is 92.5% silver, is also very strong and lower maintenance than other metals. Beware of “Nickel silver” or “German silver,” which has no real silver at all.

Girls Love Pearls

If diamonds are out of your price range, give pearls a whirl. There are three types of pearls: natural, cultured, and imitation. Natural pearls are the rarest of the three and are quite hard to find. Imitation pearls are usually plastic and don’t quite resemble the real thing. Cultured pearls are the ones you can find almost anywhere, because they are farmed and cultivated to produce the widest range on the market. You can tell you found a nice strand of pearls by the smooth, shiny surface that appears to have some depth.

Gems and Birthstones

Gems never go out of style. A great gift idea for a birthday or anniversary is a person’s birthstone. There are countless beautiful gemstones that, like pearls, come in three different types: natural, synthetic, and imitation. Synthetics are more affordable than natural, as you can imagine, but are still real, unlike imitations. You can always find out you or the recipient’s birthstone just by finding out the month they were born! Each birthstone is unique and meaningful in a different way.

Keep the Recipient in Mind

If you are buying a piece of jewelry for someone, make sure you shop for them — not for you, as you may have different tastes. You want to make sure the jewelry fits the personality of the receiver. Think about their lifestyle and what they do. Do they use their hands for their job? That person may need something a little more lightweight or prefer a necklace rather than a ring. You also want to keep in mind the type of jewelry they prefer and their taste — you want to give something they will actually wear! If the recipient never wears bracelets, you may want to give them earrings or a necklace instead. Really putting thought into the jewelry you give someone will definitely make them feel special.
